Combining IT, IoT, and OT asset visibility with software vulnerability analysis — Dragos to continue providing solutions and services to existing runZero customers and to expand product investment

KDSys, the Korean distributor of runZero, announced that Dragos, a global operational technology (OT) security company, has acquired runZero and NetRise to strengthen its ability to protect Extended Operational Technology (xOT) environments. The acquisition, officially announced by Dragos, centers on combining asset and risk information across IT, IoT, and OT with the ability to analyze the software running inside OT devices.

Protecting systems that affect physical operations, beyond the traditional OT perimeter

Dragos defines xOT as an approach that treats every digital system capable of affecting physical processes and operations as something to be protected. This includes cloud analytics platforms connected to manufacturing lines, cooling and power systems in data centers, and cloud-connected SCADA that supports substation operations. Rather than dividing IT and OT solely by organization, operating system, or network layer, the scope of security is expanded based on the actual impact on operations.

Expanding capabilities from asset discovery to software analysis and threat response

runZero consolidates asset and risk information across IT, IoT, and OT environments so that security teams can understand their exposure. NetRise provides the ability to analyze the internal software running on OT devices and to identify hidden vulnerabilities.

Dragos also draws on the automated discovery of connected devices and remediation capabilities of Phosphorus, which it acquired earlier this year. Together, these strengthen an xOT security platform that spans asset identification, understanding of software composition, vulnerability identification, and threat response.

The information obtained from each technology will be used to continuously enrich the "Dragos Intelligence Fabric," which is built on OT-specific observational data and incident response experience. On that basis, Dragos plans to further advance the analysis and guidance capabilities of its OT-focused artificial intelligence, "EmberAI."

Existing runZero solutions and services to continue; detailed integration plans to follow

Dragos stated that it will continue to provide solutions and services to existing runZero and NetRise customers and will keep investing in the products. Integration of the Phosphorus platform is already underway, and the approach to integrating runZero and NetRise into the Dragos platform will be shared over the coming months.

The acquisition coincides with the completion of Accenture's majority investment in Dragos. Dragos explained that it plans to direct the new funding into research and development to accelerate technology development and product enhancement.
